Structure and Operation of Servo Motors

We conducted our research during this phase by analyzing Servo Motors which allowed us to activate robotic arm joints for actual movement. A servo motor differs from standard motors because it maintains exact angular positions instead of operating with continuous rotational movement.

Internal Components of a Servo Motor

The internal elements function as a team to operate the motor until it reaches the desired position and then they keep it steady through the provided control input. We discovered the reasons which make these features perfect for operating robotic arm joints through our research.

The Concept of Angle Control (0–180 Degrees)

The operation of servo motors depends on their ability to position their shafts anywhere between zero degrees and one hundred eighty degrees. The servo motor will reach the specified position when you enter an angle between these boundaries and it will maintain that position. The research showed that robotic arm joints need to track their exact positions instead of just monitoring their rotational movements.

Relationship Between Torque and Load

Our team discovered that torque represents an essential factor when we operated servo motors during our project. The motor generates torque which enables rotation and object movement but robotic arms need particular torque values which depend on their joint positions and the loads they carry. We learned from this concept that robotic arm ends need more force than other parts so engineers must select motors and build structures which work together.

Hands-on Practice

Single Servo Motor Control

Our team conducted a practical study after completing the theoretical work by linking one servo motor to an Arduino which enabled direct control of its angular position. Our testing process involved moving the servo angles to check if the device would reach its target positions while keeping its position steady. Our hands-on experience revealed that servo motors operate as position control devices which achieve specific angles before maintaining their position–their operation differs from regular rotating motors.
